Setting pathways to achieving aspirations
The ELPNZ Porirua centre offers the “New Zealand Certificate in English Language” course as part of it’s syllabus. Several of the learners in this course have shown a great interest in joining the NZ Police Force. The centre invited Loretta Hunt-Tevaga, the Pacific Liaison Coordinator for the Wellington region, to come and speak about being a police officer and how to become a “cop”. The guys that wanted to join the police found this really useful, and now really believe it is an achievable dream for them… and during the presentation, yet another learner has now decided this could be a great option for him too!
The result is that the centre now has people from three different backgrounds: Samoan, Columbian and Syrian, who are actively working on developing the skillset required to become part of an increasingly diverse police force.
