During discussions and workgroups over the past 6 months in our Porirua centre, there has been a very common theme of students wanting to play football… both men and women. In line with that, Porirua Multicultural Council are organising casual weekend football and then a tournament in 2020, so we are working with PMC to get students involved. At the same time, we continue to support the wonderful Wellington Phoenix Football Diversity and Inclusion Programme by managing 30 – 40 tickets on behalf of Porirua City Council, with 40 having been handed out to the game on 27th October. Tickets include train rides.
Why are we engaging in football on the side-lines? Because it is about positive engagement, that enables our clients to spend time together, using a shared love to cross cultural, religious, and linguistic barriers, whilst becoming fit and practicing English outside the classroom… community participation is a natural by-product of this engagement for our learners. Further, the people who attend the Wellington Phoenix games are all people that wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do so…so a huge thank you to Porirua City Council, Wellington Phoenix and Capital Football for their support of new Kiwis.
