Learn English for shopping in our ESOL Literacy class

ESOL Literacy

Learning English for shopping! English Language Partners “ESOL Literacy” classes teach context-based, relevant English language to adults of refugee and migrant background, who have minimal literacy and numeracy in their mother language.

The aim is to start the learners English language development in a manner that also helps them to carry out normal everyday tasks here in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Porirua’s ESOL Literacy class 1 have been learning to ‘read money value’ as part of their Money topic, and learn the ‘vocabulary for food and supermarket items’.  To put their learning into context, the class visited their local Countdown supermarket, each armed with a worksheet that the teacher (Jan Lopez) had prepared beforehand.

The worksheet directed students to match photos with the correct vocabulary for different supermarket departments, to find and write down the prices of some vegetables and fruit, to search for listed items and note the department they are found in, and to select and write the name of one item they personally buy for the kitchen, bathroom and laundry.

As a finale, students and the teacher went through the self-service checkout together to make a purchase. This was a great success, students enjoyed the trip to learn English for shopping, and it reinforced their learning through real-world activity.
