It’s not easy to begin a new life in a country that’s vastly different from your own, and some migrants also face the challenge of overcoming the initial language barrier.

English Language Partners New Zealand is saluting refugee and migrant English learners and their volunteer teachers during Aotearoa’s ‘Festival of Adult Learning 2018.’

The national week (3-9 September) is a UNESCO initiative to celebrate the joys of adult education.

“Our ESOL Home Tutoring programme is special, it allows learners and tutors to learn alongside each other,” says Nicola Sutton, Chief Executive of English Language Partners.

“People are genuinely engaged in picking up English for their new lives here, to get to know other Kiwis, find work, and settle kids into school. Our volunteers work really hard to help them do this.

“Teaching takes place in learners’ homes, comfortable if you’re new to English, and a great environment for volunteers to grow their teaching skills.

“So we’re applauding both our learners and volunteers. They’re acquiring new skills together, and with a lot of enthusiasm!”

The Festival of Adult Learning encourages everyone to have a go at learning something new, and is an excellent time to think about volunteering. English Language Partners centres nationwide are happy to talk to people about training opportunities.

“Our tutors provide a hugely valuable service, and love what they do. Many make great friendships with learners and other volunteers.”

English Language Partners teaches English to newer Kiwis nationwide, in 23 locations, working with more than 7,000 refugee and migrant adults and 1,800 volunteers annually.
