One of the core programmes at English Language Partners is the ESOL Literacy programme.

These classes run 10 hours per week and are designed for learners who can’t read or write in their mother tongue to start learning English. On Tuesday September 17th, one of our literacy class volunteers, Jean Scarlett, organized for the Literacy leaners to visit several dairy farms in Greenpark, a 45-minute bus ride from Christchurch city. Over 50 learners, some with their children, staff and volunteers enjoyed a wonderful day as the farmers showed the workings of their dairy farms.

The group got to view the impressive modern technology in the milking shed, as well as look through the barns housing the calves. Some calves had just been born the day before, so the children and adults alike loved patting and feeding these sometimes cheeky calves.

Some of the learners enjoyed asking the questions they had prepared in advance to practise their English. Mohan from Bhutan confidently asked the farmer “How many calves do you have?”.

In between the farm visits, the group headed to Jean’s house to have lunch in her gorgeous garden. The learners were surprised by size of the garden pond and enjoyed taking photos of each other on the bridge. According to Heather, the literacy programme coordinator, the group were delighted with Jean’s kindness and lavish hospitality, especially the delicious homemade pizza and divine carrot cake that she put on for lunch. A fantastic day out was had by all!
