World Table cookbook brings people and cultures together, one meal at a time.
English Language Partners learners contributed stories and recipes from their country of origin to “World Table”, a cook book that tells stories of real people from our community through their food. The launch of “World Table” took place on 3 October at the Settlement Centre Waikato in Hamilton, attended by Hamilton Mayor Andrew King, Councillor Siggy Henry, Member of Parliament Tim Macindoe, ethnic community members and community agencies.
Most importantly those who had contributed recipes came along to celebrate the finished product. The contributors are migrants from China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Pacifica Islands, USA, Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Colombia, India, southern Africa, Italy, France, England, Ireland, Netherlands, Hungary, Turkey, Greece, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nicola Martin, the author of “World Table” is a mother of two, communications manager and former journalist with a passion for food, photography and writing. She had the idea of publishing a cook book sharing stories from New Zealand’s refugee and migrant communities. In April 2017 Nicola approached Hamilton Mulitcultural Services Trust and English Language Partners Waikato in Hamilton for ideas on how to progress her idea.
Nicola visited English Language Groups looking for people who would be willing to talk about their journey to New Zealand, their experiences of making the Waikato their home and recipes from their homeland. “It’s all about celebrating our diversity using food as a cultural bridge” said Nicola. “There are important stories to be shared by our refugee and migrant Community here in the Waikato and what better way to share them than around our kitchen tables.” Twenty- two participants from twenty counties were interviewed for the book and while this is only a fraction of all the countries represented in the Waikato region, it provides a great snapshot, some fascinating stories and mouth-watering recipes.
