Megan Cochrane, manager, welcomed the approximately 40 guests and read a special ‘Kai Karakia’. The table was laden with, amongst others, Korean, Chinese, Indian and Thai dishes. They shared space with good New Zealand breakfast kai; cakes, muffins, breads and muesli, alongside samosas, dumplings, noodles and rice. Spare a thought for Megan, who, urged to taste everyone’s offering, couldn’t begin to meet the challenge.
After the shared ‘breakfeast’, the teaching team lead a trivia quiz in four rounds; Matariki, Whangarei, International and Photo Recognition. Mixed-ability teams competed for the small prizes, one group, unfortunately, being awarded the wooden spoon! The overall quiz winners, “Maureen’s Team”, were presented with medals, to great applause and delight.
It was a morning of good fun and friendship. Wonderful to see people chatting together in English, with some of the older generation taking the chance to sit on the fringes and catch up in their own language. In addition to the trivia quiz, there were spot prizes and a raffle, won by Thu Hoang Nguyen. Another happy event with Northland ELPNZ.
