We are lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world and many Kiwis take a trip to a beach for granted, however we know many of our former refugee learners don’t have transport and have never been to a beach. Fortunately Cornwallis beach on the Manukau is not far from our Auckland West centre, so each year we take around 100 learners to have a picnic, relax and eat ice cream.
The March day was perfect, sunny skies, calm sea, and high tide. Learners enjoyed playing frisbee, football and sharing delicious food, while some people swam.
Lots of learning came from the day out – new vocabulary, making new friends, and understanding more about how Kiwis enjoy the beach. It was a pleasure to have some volunteers arrive with their learners and the learners children who played happily with bucket and spades.
