Professional Speaking for Migrants pilot a success

09 August 2016

You are looking at a group of brave learners. English Language Partners Hutt’s pilot course has seen seven learners graduate from the Certificate in Professional Speaking for Migrants course with flying colours. They are pictured here with teacher Heather Salman (third from the left).

Hutt centre manager Christine Cooks says the learners are now more self-assured. “It was really heartening to see how much their confidence had increased since the beginning of the course," she says.

The course helps migrants from non-English speaking countries to express their ideas in an appropriate, effective, clear and professional way. It is run over 11 weeks and was developed by Speech New Zealand.

A highlight for Christine was exam day. “They all produced such wonderful presentations.  They got a tremendous amount out of the course and definitely found it worthwhile.

"It has made a significant difference to the learners who graduated, including employment for two of them.”

Professional Speaking for Migrants is available at other English Language Partners' centres around New Zealand.

English Language Partners would like to thank the Settling In funding programme run by The Office of Ethnic Communities for their support.

“We hope to run it again next year,” says Christine. “There is definitely a demand for it from high-level learners. “
