Wellington and Porirua Centres - award finalists

29 June 2016

Congratulations to volunteers and staff at our Wellington Centre and Porirua Centre for being finalists in the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards 2016 – Wellington City.

ELPNZ Wellington Centre Manager Zlata Sosa says the Centre has a substantial pool of volunteers who make a great contribution to the Wellington community. This award, she says, is dedicated to them.

“They make refugees and migrants feel welcome, safe and supported,” says Ms Sosa. “It’s beautiful that they, and the organisation, are recognised by our community - that is something which is really very nice.”

It is not the first time the Wellington Centre has been acknowledged for their contribution: the Centre was also a Education & Child/Youth Development category finalist in 2009. In 2013 they were not only the category winner but were also the supreme winners.

Porirua Centre manager Jacqueline Wilton says being a finalist means that the time and effort of the Porirua team is recognised.

“This recognition is thanks to the volunteer time given by volunteer home tutors, volunteer class and admin assistants, as well as teachers and admin staff who also go beyond the expectations of their paid employment,” says Ms Wilton.

The key factors considered during judging are volunteer input, utilisation of resources, innovation and creativity, effectiveness of activities and impact within the community

Award winners will be announced August 1.

“Whatever happens, our volunteers have been recognised and we share this good news with them,” says Ms Sosa.
