Increasing the refugee quota – it’s a positive start

13 June 2016

“We are pleased about the Government’s announcement today to increase New Zealand’s refugee quota,” says Nicola Sutton, CEO, English Language Partners NZ (ELPNZ).

Ms Sutton says it’s a positive step towards New Zealand meeting their responsibilities in the international refugee landscape. She hopes this signals the start of regular increases to the quota.

English Language Partners also echoes the concerns of others that the additional places are not available immediately.

From 2018 New Zealand will increase its annual refugee quota from 750 a year to 1000. It is the first change to the quota in 40 years.

ELPNZ will continue to work with other agencies, Government and community, to respond to the needs of refugees.

“Refugees have always been one of our priority groups,” says Ms Sutton. “We will continue to be there to support these communities as they make a new life in New Zealand.”
