Learn English 

1. English for Everyday Life: English Language Groups. Day-time classes for adult migrants and refugees on the North Shore. Low cost. All levels.

2. English for Migrants: One-to-one lessons in the home with a qualified English teacher. For adults who have pre-purchased English language tuition through the New Zealand Immigration Service.

3. English for Employees: Daytime and evening classes for adults who are currently employed. English for the New Zealand workplace. All levels. Free.

4. Volunteer Home Tutor: One-to-one lessons in the home with a volunteer English tutor. For recently arrived migrants and refugees who need English tuition, but are unable to access other services. English for everyday life in New Zealand. Contact the centre for an assessment, to find out if you qualify. Beginner to pre-intermediate level only. Free. 

5. Get Ahead Start: Sel-study from DVD, books and journals and class twice a week. For adults who want to prepare for career changes or further study. Foundation Communication Course, Level 1. Intermediate to Advanced Level. Free (with a $60 refundable deposit).

Other programmes available as and when required. English for Job Seekers and job mentoring support available. Referrals to and informaiton about other specialised services and providers available.

Certificate in ESOL Home Tutoring

Would you like to become a volunteer ESOL home tutor on the North Shore?
Please phone the centre on 489 2078, or complete the volunteer application form below.

 ESOL home tutor training - the course covers a number of learning areas including:

  • Cross-cultural awareness - understanding other cultures and relating to people from different backgrounds
  • Current theories and techniques of language teaching
  • Adults as language learners
  • Identifying learner needs and setting learner goals
  • Planning tutoring sessions, using different approaches and use of resource materials

The Certificate in ESOL Home Tutoring courses run four times a year.
